A simple 3 step skincare routine to improve your skin.
How to Start a Skincare Routine
In your teenage years is usually when most people get interested in skincare. It’s usually because you are struggling with acne, starting to wear makeup, or just figuring out how to groom and pamper yourself. But there are some late bloomers as well.
As someone blessed with “good” skin, I never considered a skincare routine to be something necessary. I would remove my makeup if I ever wore any and moisturize every night. I would try to wear sunscreen if I were going to spend the day outside too. That was the extent of which I took care of my skin, until I started to become passionate about beauty and skincare.
With just minimal effort, you can see a big difference in the way your skin looks and feels. Regardless of what it looks like, all skin can benefit from taking proper care of it.
3-Step Skincare Routine
So chances are, you’ve heard of the 10-Step Korean beauty routine by now. If that scares you (and your wallet), you’ll be happy to know that in the US, we promote a much more basic routine.
It consists of 3 easy steps:
Cleansing your skin is the act of removing all the dirt and impurities built up throughout the day. Even if you don’t wear makeup, don’t skip this step!
It preps your skin for the next two steps. If you don’t cleanse, your pores will keep those impurities and potentially get clogged or develop acne.
There are many different types of cleansers from wipes, solid cleansers, to oil based cleansers, and more. My favorite is micellar water, it acts like a magnet to draw out the impurities from your skin. It’s water based so it’s very light and easy to use.
After removing the dirt from your pores, this step helps to “close” them. If you’ve just cleared them, you don’t want to allow more dirt to get in.
Toners generally all feel the same, as their viscosity and look are all similar. For sensitive skin, look for alcohol-free varieties.
After removing the dirt from your pores and sealing them, it’s time to moisturize your face. Proper moisturizing of the face is necessary to create a moisture barrier for your skin that helps reduce sensitivity and protects it from bacteria and environmental factors (source).
If you’re skin is too dry or dry all the time, you may need to work on developing it’s moisture barrier.
Regularly moisturizing also helps to prevent age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles.
Good Skincare Routine For Beginners
This simple, three-step process is perfect for anyone who hasn’t developed their skincare routine yet.
While you should strive to get in at least the full 3-steps at night, this routine is flexible. You can do it morning and night, or just cleansing and moisturizing in the morning with the full routine at night.
You can build upon this routine as you find appropriate. Applying face masks, sunscreen, eye cream, exfoliating, etc., are all good ideas.
The point is it’s a good base for you to experiment upon and find what works best for you and your skin.
