4 ways to remain focused on your goals
How to Stay Dedicated to Your Goals
You have a dream, you set your goals, and now you’re wondering, “how can I commit to achieving my goals”? The loftier the goal, the more urgent that question is. The good news is, it only takes small steps to reach big goals, or as the common saying goes: the way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.
It takes ambition and courage to get to anywhere in life, so don’t let fear of failing hold you back.
Four Ways to Stay Committed to Your Goals
The process of setting goals can be laborious in itself, and working on them can be even more strenuous. Reaching your goals requires perseverance, a trait that you may or may not have had to exercise.
Luckily, though it sounds daunting, starting a journey to reach your goals is one of the most rewarding experiences in life. You’re efforts can, and will pay off.
To get the most of that experience and make it more enjoyable along the way, here are some tips for how to stay committed to your journey:
Have a Plan
You may or may not have already achieved this step during the goal setting process, but it is probably the most important step. You aren’t going to achieve your goal without a plan. We’ve all seen this quote:
A goal without a plan is just a wish.
-Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
That plan will look different for everyone based on your goals, resources, and current progress.
The main point is to break big goals into smaller goals (milestones), then break those smaller goals into actionable steps. You can also add a monthly, weekly, and daily schedule or tracker to make sure you are on the right path.
Believe in Yourself and in Your Goal
If you don’t believe you can accomplish your goal, you won’t. It’s easy to get weighed down by the grind, and start to have doubts. But by focusing on the end result and acting as if change has already happened, you will be more motivated and encouraged.
It’s about shifting your mindset to have no doubts that you can achieve your goal. Of course you need to respect the journey, and be thankful along the way. And you shouldn’t ignore the fact that there will be complications that you’ll have to overcome. The point is to remain focused on what you’re setting out to accomplish, and what you hope to get from that. Focusing on your motivation can help keep you going even when things get difficult.
Eliminate Noise and Distractions
Only you know what’s keeping you from reaching your goals, whether it’s bad habits or bad friends. Pay attention to what is distracting your or weighing you down and do your best to eliminate it.
It can be as simple as not getting enough rest at night so you are too tired to work during the day, or something harder to break free from such as emotional eating.
We all have our struggles, but – to the best of your ability – don’t let them keep you from reaching your goals.
Keep going, even if that means you have to work at a slower pace to get to a place where you can fully concentrate on your dreams. Just making the effort is enough, so don’t let negative feelings like shame and guilt hold you back even further.
When you track your work it’s easy to see what’s working and what’s not. From there you can make changes to your schedule and short-term goals.
Tracking your progress and analyzing it is key to being efficient.
A part of analyzing your work is to look at failures objectively, as something you can learn from.
Don’t make the mistake of dwelling in your failures and allowing them to produce feelings of guilt and shame in you. They can cause self-doubt to creep in and hold you back.
Use your accomplishments as well as your failures as experiences to draw from to plan how to move forward.
How to Commit to a Goal and Remain Focused
You can commit to your goals by having a plan, believing in yourself, getting rid of what’s holding you back, and by constantly learning and growing.
To remain focused on your goal, it should always be at the forefront of your mind as you visualize your life being changed by achieving it.
