When it comes to self-improvement and self-development, change starts from within.  Its starts with the acknowledgement that something needs to change, the plan to make that happen, and the action you take to make it real.

Ways to Challenge Yourself This Year

There are several areas of your life that are ideal for challenging yourself.

Depending on where you want to see the most personal growth, you can set your priorities for where to start first.

Emotional

Emotional health is something that is often put on the back burner, if not neglected totally.  When you neglect your emotional health, it can be a major source of stress in your life.  You can improve your overall wellness by attacking these issues:

  • Improve self-confidence
  • Improve self-awareness
  • Manage anger better
  • Stop negative thoughts
  • Track your moods
  • Take a personality test
  • Start therapy (therapy is a big step and may not be needed for everyone; but if it’s something you’ve been feeling is necessary and have been avoiding it, try looking further into your options.)

Spiritual/Mental

Taking care of our spiritual and mental health is something we put off because we think “me time” is selfish, we are too busy with life, or we don’t see it as a necessity.  That is unfortunate because doing activities to improve your spirituality and mental health can have extremely positive effects on your overall happiness.  Try one or a few of these exercises to reduce stress in your life today:

Physical

For people who don’t exercise regularly, an exercise routine can be intimidating.  There are infinite health benefits to exercising regularly that you may miss out on by remaining inactive.  With so many creative ways to incorporate exercise in your daily life, you can easily get started today:

  • Gym membership
  • Hiking
  • Walking a local trail
  • Sign up for a marathon
  • Jogging around the neighborhood or at a local track
  • Lifting weights
  • Taking up a sport or activity
  • Dance lessons
  • Classes (yoga, boxing, spin, etc.)
  • Outdoor hobby (fishing, cycling, frisbee, golf, etc.)

Relationships

You might be looking to improve the relationships in your life, from your parents, your children, your spouse, or even your friends.  If you already have a good relationship, this may be easy.  It can come down to being more compassionate, communicating better, and spending more time with the other person.

Difficulties in relationships can be a major source of pain in people’s lives.  While you can’t change other people’s behavior, you can change the way you react to it to lessen the affect on you.  You may also have acknowledged unpleasant behaviors of your own that you want to change.  Whatever the case, there are a few things you can do to improve your relationships:

  • Improve your communication skills
  • Know your love language
  • Plan a surprise for your partner or loved one
  • Learn how to better resolve conflict
  • Improve your patience
  • Plan DIY activities for your kids
  • Set up a weekly game night for your family

Financial Goals

Money is a major source of stress for some and it can cause conflicts in relationships.  Whether it’s because you were never taught the basics of managing money, you’ve fallen on tough times, or you’ve incurred a lot of debt, there are ways you can improve your finances for a brighter outlook:

  • Open a new savings account
  • Start investing
  • Create a budget
  • Pay off debts
  • Start saving for a vacation or travel destination

Personal Goals

While some of these areas seem arduous, your personal goals are a place to challenge yourself in a fun way.  They are where you can attempt the things you’ve always wanted to try but never had the courage to do.  Cross off one of these from your bucket list this year:
